Why Special Needs Academy?

Special Skills Academy For Kids has recognized there is a lack of consistent structured recreation, sports and social programs for children and adults with developmental disability in the DFW metroplex .

Special Skills Academy For Kids created The Special Skills Academy to change that and meet the need of this population.
The academy offers strength and basketball training twice a week in a centrally located area of Dallas.

The program is offered year-round twice a week to make it convenient for families who might have other obligations.
Children and young adults can attend one or both of these sessions.

Strategies Used During Training

Various strategies are used to encourage and engage athletes during the training sessions Including

• prompting and cuing to encourage participation
• peer mentoring
• individualizing activities
• using visual supports
• using set routine drills
• offering fun and simple games
• using role modeling/ video modeling in an inclusive environment
• adding music to exercise routings
• using sensory equipment to encourage participation

Tuition and Fees

The academy is for all athletes with special needs. The organization covers the cost of the program by doing fundraising and grants

Additional Social Engagement and Pre-vocational Opportunities

The academy also provides social engagement and volunteering opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and intellectual developmental disabilities in the community in an inclusive setting

Healthy Choices

Quarterly training for athletes and their families focused on nutrition, exercise and healthy living by inviting guest speakers and educators from the community


Pre-vocational and Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunity to participate in vocational activities during fundraising events organized by Special Skills Academy For Kids program. Athletes participate with typical peers and families in gathering shoes, pairing and packing shoes and taking inventory

Giving back to the Community

Athletes participate in giving back to the community by participating in the monthly

Leadership Development

Peer mentoring and leadership opportunities are given to athletes who want to develop leadership skills. Athletes who have higher level of skills are given the opportunity to can become assistant coaches and help support peer athletes.
